Phoebe & Bear: White Cliffs of Dover

While driving down to Dover to see the White Cliffs and the Dover Castle, our navigation system (Tom-Tom) sent us on some crazy routes through windy roads with shrubs encroaching on the road or where it became one lane with no room for two cars to pass through from the cars parked on both sides of the road. Jan told us there is a system of communication by blinking your headlights, but we just gave way to any oncoming traffic and allowed them to pass. They all thought we were great! This was one of the bigger roads we were on!

We hiked along the path along the top of the cliffs...it was a beautiful sunny day and a spectacular view.

The chalk is formed from the decomposed marine life--1/2 cm is formed in 100,000 years. There are deposits of black shiny rock running through it.

Below the cliffs lay the harbour where the ferries dock and unload. We saw cars and trucks drive off in a steady stream. Dover is also where the Channel Tunnel comes across from France. You can also see the outline of the castle on the hill.
