The Dream Castle & Algaeu

This beautiful castle high up on a hilltop in the Bavarian Alps is one of the most visited in all of Europe. It was one of six castles the king dreamed of building.

Neuschwanstein Castle was the inspiration for the Disney castle so it will seem a bit familiar to you.

Though it is quite a climb to the top (or you can ride in a horse drawn carriage), there are plenty of shops and restaurants along the way.

The entrance is impressive...

and the courtyard too...

No pictures could be taken inside the castle (they want you to buy the book) with the exception of a few windows, allowing you to see the beautiful valley below or the mountainside.

This is a model of what the finished castle would have been. Unfortunately the young king died mysteriously leaving his obsession with building elaborate castles to go unfulfilled. His subjects were not happy with him, although his extravagance now brings many visitors and revenue to Germany.

As we drove from the city, the castle looked alabaster on the green hill.

We stopped for a meal in Baeren, Nesselwang at a quaint little restaurant near the area the Schneiders go skiing.

Along the way to Lake Constantine, we went through Algaeu on winding mountain roads and stretches of green meadows with horses and very happy cows!
